About This Project

Clean Compute NL Initiative

This documentation portal presents comprehensive research and analysis for developing hyperscale AI data center infrastructure in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Project Genesis

The Clean Compute NL initiative emerged from the convergence of three transformative trends:

  1. Explosive AI Growth - Global AI compute demand growing 400% by 2030
  2. Sustainability Mandates - Hyperscalers committing to carbon-free, water-positive operations
  3. NL's Unique Position - Surplus clean hydropower and cold ocean waters

Research Scope

This documentation covers:

Economic Analysis

  • Cooling system economics (sCO2 vs conventional)
  • Detailed financial modeling (CAPEX, OPEX, IRR, NPV)
  • Competitive position analysis (NL vs global markets)
  • Carbon and environmental value quantification

Technical Engineering

  • Supercritical CO2 cooling system design
  • Heat transfer and thermodynamic calculations
  • Site assessment and selection criteria
  • Safety and reliability analysis

Business Development

  • Government proposal and policy recommendations
  • Investor pitch materials
  • Funding opportunity mapping
  • Stakeholder engagement tools

Key Findings

Technical Feasibility

The sCO2 ocean cooling concept is technically sound: - Proven subsea pipe technology (oil & gas industry) - Established sCO2 heat transfer principles - Conservative engineering margins applied - Demonstrated precedents (Project Natick, SWAC systems)

Economic Viability

The business case is compelling: - 18.4% IRR exceeds typical infrastructure hurdles - Lowest TCO among comparable markets - Significant environmental value adds - Multiple revenue streams identified

Strategic Fit

Strong alignment with policy priorities: - Canadian AI sovereignty objectives - Provincial economic diversification - Federal clean technology mandates - Hyperscaler sustainability goals
